Dastakar @ Royal Brocades, Ahmedabad

Paresh Patel’s family has been weaving Ashavalis, also known as the golden brocades of Gujarat for a few generations now.  What started out with a few weavers during his grandfather’s time is now a 100 loom enterprise. He was happy to show us around his studio and weaving unit.

What makes his contribution more meaningful are the experiments he is doing with natural dyes and the passion with which he is going about it. He has set up a natural dyeing unit where he keeps working with madder, onion skin, indigo, kasim, sappan, etc.

He and his team are also working with different yarns, including khadi which has produced some beautiful ashavalis in khadi silk. In the absence of proper certification, he prefers to call it hand spun cotton instead of khadi. His experiments with wool specifically pashmina, kora silk, and even denim has produced some beautiful pieces of fabric.

He plans to make Royal Brocades into a brand that produces quality natural dyed ashavalis.

They have a few exhibits displayed at the special Indigo exhibition currently ongoing (till 31 Mar 2019) at the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum in Ahmedabad.
